Baldock has a proud industrial heritage. In 1818, Samuel Courtauld established Townsford Mill on the River Colne, beginning a silk manufacturing tradition that would define the town for over a century. The black crepe for Queen Victoria's funeral in 1901 was woven right here in Baldock.
Today, we see solar energy as the natural successor to that industrial spirit — clean power generated on Baldock rooftops, transforming how the town creates and uses energy. From Courtauld's silk to solar silk, Baldock continues to innovate.
